From 1986 to 1988 Thomas (Dr. rer. nat. habil.) was a postdoctoral scientist at the Institute of Mammalian Genetics for the GSF Research Center for Environment and Health. Afterwards, he became Head of AG BIODV bioinformatics group at the Institute of Experimental Genetics until 2002.
Thomas earned both his master’s of science in chemistry (Chemie-Diplom) in 1981 and his doctorate (Dr. rer.nat.) in biochemistry in 1986 from Ludwig Maximilian’s University of Munich. In 2002, he went on to receive Dr. habil (German professor level) in Genetics from the Technical University of Munich.
2009 he was appointed as adjunct professor at the University of Michigan in the department of internal medicine / nephrology, in Ann Arbor, MI, USA,.
He was CEO and CSO of Genomatix Software GmbH (which he founded) from 1997 till 2009, continued as one of four managing directors till 2011 when he left Genomatix operations. He is now a board member of the company and works as a free scientific & business consultant.
