Varioptic’s liquid lens brings digital still camera image quality to
mobile devices. Varioptic is a global leader in liquid lens technology
and addresses the fast growing global market for high quality picture
and video taking with camera phones. The liquid lens’ technology
allows for better optical quality, high robustness and reduced cost,
enabling camera phones to achieve image qualities found in traditional
digital cameras.
Varioptic liquid lenses take an innovative approach to optical image
management. Similar to the way in which the human eye focuses by
altering lens curvature via muscle contractions, liquid lenses focus
by altering lens curvature via the application of control voltages.
The result is a fast, efficient and precise focusing system that
contains no moving parts.
Founded in 2002 and headquartered in Lyon, France with an extensive
technology base, Varioptic liquid lenses are industry tested and
qualified to meet mobile phone requirements. Major camera module
manufacturers such as Samsung Electro Mechanics (SEMCO) and ST
Microelectronics have acquired non-exclusive licenses for Varioptic
liquid lens technology.
To date, over 100 companies are evaluating Varioptic’s liquid lens
products to build and integrate imaging solutions. Varioptic’s liquid
lens is also integrated into non-mobile applications such as webcams,
bar code readers, industrial cameras, biometrics and security devices.
High-volume manufacturing capability is assured by Asia-based partners
Seiko Instruments Inc. (Japan) and Creative Sensors Inc (Taiwan).
Production in Asia began in January 2007 and is expected to exceed 50
million units per annum in 2010.
